Common questions

How do I avoid habit reminder texts feeling like spam?

Keep them to one per day, at the time the user chose. The moment someone set up their habit reminder, they told you when they want to be nudged. Send it then and not again that day — even if they haven't logged yet. A second text "just checking in" is the one that gets the STOP. One text per habit per day at the right moment feels like a useful nudge; anything more feels like pressure.

Should the streak-save text go out at the start of the day or closer to midnight?

Closer to the end of the day's window — when there's still time but not much. A streak-save text at 9am just gets ignored alongside everything else. The same text at 8pm, when the window closes at midnight, carries real urgency because the loss is actually imminent. Most apps set the habit window to end of day — fire the streak nudge 3–4 hours before that. Early enough to act, late enough to feel real.

What's the difference between a habit reminder and a streak-save text?

The habit reminder fires every day; the streak-save only fires when there's something to lose. A habit reminder is the daily nudge — "time for your run." It goes out regardless of streak status. The streak-save is the loss-aversion message — "your 30-day streak ends tonight" — and only fires when the user has an active streak and hasn't logged yet. They're different triggers, different copy, and often different times of day. Build them as two separate flows.

When do I ask users if it's okay to text them?

When they set up their first habit or notification preference. That's the natural moment — they're already telling you what they want to be reminded about and when. The opt-in ask fits right there. The problem

US carriers require these from every business that sends texts. Getting approved can take weeks if not done right.

Registration

Before anything sends, your business gets registered in a central registry that every US carrier checks — legal name, tax ID, website, and what you plan to send. Details have to match your IRS records exactly, or the application bounces.

Carrier review

Reviewers check your registration and your messages against carrier rules before you're allowed to send. Other providers typically take two to three weeks — and every rejection restarts the clock, with no guarantee the next round clears.

You have to collect and keep proof that every recipient agreed to get texts from you — how they opted in, when, and which kinds of messages they agreed to. Someone who signed up for appointment reminders hasn't agreed to marketing.
